Sigiriya was built by King Kasyapa in the 5th century as his royal citadel and fortress. After the king’s death, the fortress was converted into a Buddhist monastery until it was eventually abandoned. The site is a unique blend of ancient urban planning, with its royal palace at the summit and beautiful gardens below. The frescoes and ancient graffiti offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the people who visited this historical site centuries ago. Today, Sigiriya is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Asia.
