Poson Festival – A Sacred Celebration of Buddhism
📅 Date & Period:June Full Moon Poya Day (Poson Poya)
Celebrated for 2-3 days
📍 Main Location:Anuradhapura and Mihintale, Sri Lanka
Why is it Special?
The Poson Festival commemorates the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka by Arahant Mahinda, the son of Emperor Ashoka of India, over 2,300 years ago. It is the second-most significant Buddhist festival after Vesak.
The heart of the celebration takes place in Mihintale, a sacred mountain where Arahant Mahinda first met King Devanampiya Tissa and preached Buddhism. Pilgrims from all over Sri Lanka gather here to pay homage, meditate, and participate in religious activities.
The festival is a peaceful and spiritual event, with religious processions, almsgiving stalls (Dansal), and illuminated decorations creating a serene atmosphere.
